Global Biopharma Manufacturer - Net-Zero Decarbonization Strategy

Net-Zero Decarbonization Strategy

Our Net-Zero decarbonization strategy supports our client’s global commitment to reach carbon goals by 2035. Genesis recently conducted a two-part strategic study to reach this milestone. This initiative helps eliminate all Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Furthermore, our project provides a clear roadmap for facility operations.

Energy Mapping and Baseline Development

Our team used a rigorous methodology rooted in detailed energy mapping. We treated these maps as process flow diagrams to isolate energy and water streams. Consequently, this established a baseline for analyzing steam, cooling, and our core services.

Results of the Net-Zero Decarbonization Strategy

The core of this Net-Zero decarbonization strategy relied on the ingestion of our client’s historical data. To ensure accuracy, the team evaluated performance at granular intervals. Specifically, we analyzed HVAC performance every 10 minutes and clean utilities every 2 minutes. This resulted in over 250,000 data points per sensor over a full year.

We cross-referenced internal data with hourly weather data to validate these models. These digital twin models allowed us to assess the impact of outside air on energy consumption. As a result, we captured seasonal variations with precision.

Advanced Analytical Investigations

Genesis used custom data-driven modules to translate raw data into actionable insights. A highlight of the study was the simulation of an adaptive temperature control strategy.

Our team co-authored a methodology in Pharmaceutical Engineering: Temperature and Humidity Requirements. This strategy adjusts air temperature based on real-time humidity loads. By optimizing these setpoints, the facility avoids the cycle of over-cooling and subsequent reheating.

Success of the Net-Zero Decarbonization Strategy

The simulation showed that adaptive control yields operating cost savings of $130,000 per year. This represents more than a 50% reduction in local cooling and heating costs. Additionally, by combining granular analysis with predictive modeling, our strategy is sustainable and achievable. This roadmap offers the specific opportunities needed to help the client achieve their 2035 milestone.
